I've been working on a story for the past two months in the Ecuadorian Amazon surrounding the ongoing issues with oil in the region. During my time I've lived in various indigenous communities, on ranches with campasinos and is seedy boom towns sprung throughout the jungle. As I'm beginning to edit through my story, I'm realizing there are many images I took during my time here that won't be in the story and might never see the light of day if i didn't post them on my blog. I am going to make a series of posts with outtakes, images I took when not documenting my subjects, from my time in the various places I have lived. Here Is a series of daily life images from Cofan Dureno a community along the Augo Rico river.

SF Celebrates After Giants Win World Series

Monday Nov.1,2010, the San Francisco Giants won the world series for the first time since the franchise relocated to the Bay Area in 1958. It was a magical moment for San Francisco. Some of my fondest childhood memories are from going to games with my father and grandfather. It was amazing to see all the torture come to an end. It brought pure joy to so many people. The streets of the city were filled an energy unlike ever before. As the evening and things escalated, the scene changed and some damage started getting done. This is my neighborhood your seeing in these photos. Right where I have been living the past few years in the mission district.

...and then came fire

Later in the evening I found out the van broken into and covered with graffiti belonged to the couple who owns the corner market. The are so lovely and have invested everything into immigrating and running their small store. When I was buying a beer last night, he was really shaken up and we spoke about the damage. As I was leaving he said, "Fuck America." It was too bad the shit couldn't have happened to better people.

Giants win the pennant

Yesterday our own san francisco giants won the national league pennant. I'm not a fan of baseball but it was nice to see a home team win a big game. The second after wilson threw the last pitch, the streets on SF erupted. I could hear madness from my living room. I walked outside and down the street to 22nd and mission. People were estatic as they crowded street corners and rejoiced with passing traffic. I had a beer and then took a handful of photos. This one made me smile...

...this one made me curious. People were exploding with passion and camaraderie as they celebrated out on the streets. Firefighters sounded their sirens, everyone giving each other high-fives, giant fight songs being sung, beer slinging through the air and as I pull my camera to my eye I look up and see a lone person standing at their window and I begin to wonder what they are thinking and if they like baseball or if they too are lost in the fact that if these people were as passionate about important issues as they were baseball maybe the world wouldn't be so fucked

They didn't want me to shoot a travel piece, yet go through my archives and make an edit showing the people and architecture of San Francisco, as I saw it while working as a documenatry photographer. Went out to climb in the East Bay Sunday May 10th, 2009. Just went out to chill with my good friend Jeremy and took the camera along. He's one of the sickest climbers I have had the pleasure to witness and he's always pushing me to new limits on the wall. This summer, since I am staying in California I am going to split my time between climbing in the sierras and working weekends in the bay area. Recently I have become more focussed on shooting climbing and surfing and I think it's about time to make it happen. Nothing is better then escaping the city life to enjoy natures beauty in it's essence. It's a feeling that I have held onto since childhood and one that I will never let go of. When all else fails, go climb a rock!

Red Bull hosted a soap box derby Saturday October 18 on Dolores Street in SF. At one point, there were 100,000 people in Dolores Park. It was a good time, definetley worth seeing.

Castel Rock Soul Session

Got down to Castle Rock State Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains today. It's such an epic place, masses of sandstone boulders scattered around the woods like they were dropped by a giant. On the beautiful fall days you can see all the way to the ocean when your in the Goat Rock overhang. At sunset we were by Castle Falls and I snapped a few frames of my buddies Hazen and Brucey free soloing the corner crack, a mellow 100 foot climb. These guys are the soulfulest heads I know, No Rope, No Gear, No One Watching.............Soul.

Bluegrass in Golden Gate

The three day Bluegrass Festival took place in Golden Gate Park this weekend. On the final day of performance, while sitting with freinds enjoying the atmosphere, I couldn't help but be drawn to this beautiful beam of light stricking a women and her child. I live for those monents, so often I spend my days chasing light, eating, sleeping and breathing it. Its a breath of fresh air when it just pops up right in front of you.

The Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco is the worlds largest leather fetish fair in the world. Anything goes at the fair, really anything, only in SF this stuff goes down. I tried to refrain from shooting the numerous sex acts that take place along the streets and just looked for light late in the evening.

Uhhhh...The system, shock and survival...Every time I come back I return minus a fraction... fractions of heart and soul...they remain in the scattered spots I passed through with the many friends I made along the way. About at the point of uplifting, stories are in the making back here and It's time now to edit my recent work and start seeing more.

I was fortunate enough to get to ride along with paramedics in Mexico City Saturday night. After waking up Saturday morning and getting the address for an ambulance station operating in the neighborhood where I'm residing, I took a short bus ride to check it out only to find the station to be a house with an elderly women living there. She said the station had moved but her son Carlos worked there. Two minutes later Carlos was on the phone explaining that most ambulances in Mexico City are private and operated by volunteers and there actually is no station. Many paramedics here buy ambulances and park them at their homes. He didn't own one himself but knew someone who did. After a few minutes Carlos simply said to come back at 7:00 and an ambulance would pick me up. At 7:15 that evening a doctor and a medical technician showed up and after a brief introduction we were off. They said to put on one of their jackets and to just say I work for them if a cop questions me on a scene. When we took off in the van for the first call...Flying full throttle past traffic with the sirens blasting as I bounced around the back......unforgettable.

I spent this past week working with the ngo Project Luz teaching children from the community photography. It was an amazing experience to share the gift I love so much with such promising youth. It was a very busy week but I was able to make a few images when I was out with the kids roaming around the city with open eyes. Nothing too heavy, but here are a few singles fro my week. Today was the first day I had free since I arrived in Mexico City. It has been all work these past few weeks with the Foundry Workshop and then Project Luz. It was great getting to know so many great shooters and learn so much at the workshop and rewarding to see those kids big eyes light for photography up during project luz. Now it is time to fly free and do some work. I will be here in Mexico City for a while longer feeling out a project before heading down south to Oaxaca then onto Guatemala. When it rains it pours.....wet season in one of the most populated city's in world...got the mexico city blues in my stomach from all this fried street food.

Here are a few photos from my first days in Mexico. I havn't been shooting much but just having a good time hanging around with a great bunch of people. In this order, a photo from the streets outside the house I am staying in, second from the open market central de abastos, third from one of my many metro rides, fourth from xochimlco a nice place outside the city and the last from a super cool idie bar where I saw my first mexican concert. I am in the begining process of starting a story but thus far have been trying to just have a good time with the many great shooters down here drinking cerveza and eating tacos. mas pronto. chau.
